Montan-Stiftung-Saar and recycling specialist Roth International GmbH have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to establish a technology partnership in the field of battery recycling. The aim of the cooperation is to establish a sustainable raw material cycle in the region.

Technology partnership for spent batteries

Approximately 50 kilotons of spent batteries are recycled annually in Europe, according to the Fraunhofer Institute. A quantity that will increase significantly in the coming years. The technology partnership between Montan-Stiftung-Saar and Roth International is a first step toward establishing battery recycling in Saarland. In addition to technical cooperation, it also includes joint sales and research activities.

The industrial foundation plans to gradually establish sustainable recycling of lithium-ion batteries in Saarland. The focus will be on vehicle batteries. In the first stage, the construction of a plant for dismantling, crushing and sorting is planned. In a possible further stage, investments will also be made in the further processing of the recycled product.

Technologically, the new plant will be equipped so that production scrap from battery production can also be recycled. This makes it an industrially sensible addition in the region to the new locations of the battery cell manufacturer ACC (Automotive Cells Company) and the automotive supplier Svolt Energy Technology Europe.

“We are pleased to have found a competent partner for this forward-looking project in Roth International,” explains Reinhard Störmer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Montan-Stiftung-Saar. “With this technology partnership, Montan-Stiftung-Saar is laying the foundation for a sustainable circular economy in the region. This promotes the change towards a stable and sustainable economic region and creates promising jobs.”

The technology partnership in the field of battery recycling consistently continues the innovation strategy of the “InnovationsCluster 4.0” of the Montan-Stiftung-Saar, which was launched last year. The close networking between science and economy within the framework of the initiative will promote the establishment of a sustainable raw material cycle in Saarland and make it successful, as battery and recycling technologies are currently in a strong development phase.
