Tenaris recognized for sustainability initiatives among global steel companies

In line with its sustainability goals, Tenaris has allocated around 30% of its capital expenditure to projects contributing to reducing carbon emissions and other environmental objectives.

April 2024 | Tenaris has been recognized as a worldsteel Sustainability Champion for the seventh consecutive year, underscoring the company’s commitment to promoting sustainability within the global steel industry.

The Tenaris sustainability journey is guided by its industrial values and features a strong commitment to decarbonizing its operations, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions by 30 percent by 2030, compared to 2018 levels.

Tenaris Chairman & CEO Paolo Rocca, highlighted in the opening letter of the recently released 2023 Sustainability Report:

“We made a significant advance in our decarbonization program, when, after a USD 200 million investment, we successfully put into operation our first wind farm in Argentina and are now moving forward with a similar investment to build a second one.”

In line with its sustainability goals, Tenaris has allocated around 30% of its capital expenditure to projects contributing to reducing carbon emissions and other environmental objectives. These include investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency improvements, and air quality enhancements across its global operations.

This year, the company has been recognized alongside other industry leaders, including Ternium, ArcelorMittal, BlueScope Steel Limited, China Steel Corporation (CSC), HBIS Group Co. Ltd., JFE Steel Corporation, JSW Steel Limited, POSCO Holdings, Tata Steel and voestalpine AG.

Tenaris is among the leading manufacturers of pipes and related services for the world’s energy industry and certain other industrial applications. On May 6, 2025, MAEGMA Minerals signed a cooperation agreement with Primetals Technologies for the construction of a MIDREX Flex plant with an annual capacity of 2 million tons of HBI in Lumut, Perak, Malaysia. The new plant, delivered in collaboration with Midrex Technologies, Inc. (Midrex), will enable MAEGMA to meet the growing demand for high-quality HBI in Southeast Asia. Commissioning is planned for 2029.

Uniper und thyssenkrupp Uhde bündeln Kräfte für Schlüsseltechnologie der globalen Wasserstoffwirtschaft

thyssenkrupp Uhde und Uniper gehen eine strategische Partnerschaft ein, um eine zentrale Technologie für den globalen Wasserstoffhandel zur industriellen Reife zu bringen: den großtechnischen Ammoniak-Cracker. In einem Ammoniak-Cracker wird Ammoniak bei hoher Temperatur katalytisch in seine Bestandteile Wasserstoff und Stickstoff zerlegt und anschließend in einer Aufreinigung reiner Wasserstoff erzeugt. Gemeinsam wird hierfür im ersten Schritt eine Demonstrationsanlage mit einer Kapazität von 28 Tonnen Ammoniak pro Tag am Uniper-Standort Gelsenkirchen-Scholven errichtet. Die Anlage wird eine der ersten ihrer Art weltweit sein und soll u. a. als Grundlage für das geplante Wasserstoff-Importterminal in Wilhelmshaven dienen, wo die Technologie großindustriell in einem zweiten Schritt zur Anwendung kommen soll.
