From 15 to 18 September 2015 the Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories (UNITECR) will take place in Vienna, Austria. The biennial conference is one of the most important panels for scientific and technical matters regarding refractories.

voestalpine is investing over EUR 100 million in a new continuous caster which will produce over 1.2 million tons of high quality steel slabs annually. The new plant is to be built in Linz where the company is headquartered. The groundbreaking for the continuous caster took place on 16 July.

The European Union has set ambitious climate targets. The proposal to reform the emissions trading system, published on 15 July by the European Commission, drastically contradicts the EU Commission’s strategy for jobs, growth and investments. It does not take into account the guidelines for climate policy which have been set by the European Council in October 2014 to maintain competitiveness of the European industry and to avoid a potential production shift out of the EU due to rising costs caused by emission trading.

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) and SMS group have successfully commissioned its high-speed eight-strand billet caster at the Angul Odisha plant. The caster is the largest high speed billet caster in India. Within only 13 months from ground-breaking the JSPL and SMS group team have commissioned the billet caster plant.

The European Steel Association (EUROFER) reacted to the official publication of the EU Commission proposal on the revision of the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS). The industry calls on EU policy makers to ensure that the proposal is adjusted in order to fully offset direct and indirect carbon costs at the level of the most efficient steel plants in Europe.

The European Commission presented a legislative proposal to revise the EU emissions trading system (ETS) for the period after 2020, in line with the 2030 climate and energy policy framework and the Energy Union strategy. This is the first legislative step in delivering on the EU’s target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 % domestically by 2030.

ArcelorMittal, LanzaTech, and Primetals Technologies have entered into a letter of intent to construct Europe’s first-ever commercial scale production facility to create bioethanol from waste gases produced during the steelmaking process. The resulting bioethanol can cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 80 per cent compared with conventional fossil fuels. The facility will be located at ArcelorMittal’s steel plant in Ghent, Belgium.

Praxair acquired Cryospec and Garland Welding Supplies, two US-distributors of industrial and specialty packaged gases and related supplies. The two industrial gas suppliers have annual sales of about $10 million combined for 2014.
