Lots of discussions and great interest – At another dialogue market in November, thyssenkrupp Steel provided information about the progress in planning for the construction of the new direct reduction plant. Here, the experts from thyssenkrupp Steel from the various departments talked to around 50 residents and interested parties, answered questions and explained how the new system works. The direct reduction plant will be built by 2026 on the factory site at the Südhafen between Alt-Walsum and Fahrn. thyssenkrupp Steel would like to take the environment with us in this process and explain what will happen on the site in the next few years. For this purpose, thyssenkrupp Steel invited people to the Zum Johanniter restaurant in Alt-Walsum.

Transformation of steel production in Duisburg

The direct reduction plant with two downstream melters is scheduled to be built on the factory premises between Alt-Walsum and Fahrn by the end of 2026 and will produce pig iron using climate-neutral hydrogen in the long term. The plant is the first major step towards decarbonizing steel production at the Duisburg site; all steel production should be climate-neutral by 2045 at the latest. This makes thyssenkrupp Steel a frontrunner and pioneer of green transformation, positioning itself to be competitive for the future and securing jobs in Duisburg.

Great interest in open dialogue

In order to find out about these upcoming changes, many people from the surrounding area visited the Dialogmarkt. They all took advantage of the opportunity to receive detailed information about the direct reduction plant and the upcoming transformation in individual topic areas directly from the experts responsible. Questions on topics such as transformation, security, the environment, logistics and many more were raised and discussed in a lively manner. In addition, thyssenkrupp Steel exhibited numerous exhibits at the dialogue market, including a model of the newly built plant complex. In addition to this model, the company showed input materials and products from the various process stages as well as visualizations of the system from different perspectives of the urban area.

The dialogue continues

For thyssenkrupp Steel, the dialogue markets format sets an example for ongoing, long-term and transparent dialogue with citizens and interested stakeholders. Current information about the planned direct reduction plant is available on their website. Anyone interested can also find the visualizations and posters that thyssenkrupp Steel presented at the dialogue market.
