January 15, 2024 | The SMS group introduces a comprehensive combustion system, the SMS ZEROFlame family, offering two distinct lateral burner product lines with versatile configurations designed to accommodate a broad spectrum of locally available fuels.

Tailored for rich gases such as coke oven gas (COG) and natural gas (NG), the SMS ZEROFlame family is adaptable to lean gases in the dual flame configuration as well.

SMS group boasts an expansive portfolio, encompassing lateral and radiant burners to combustion optimization systems for reheating furnaces. Reflecting the evolving landscape of steel manufacturing towards lower-emission practices, the entire range prioritizes sustainability and operational efficiency. Ensuring maximum adaptability, all burners are multi-fuel capable and hydrogen-ready, facilitating a seamless transition to a hydrogen-based economy when local fuel infrastructure is established.

In regions where rich gases like coke oven gas (COG) and natural gas (NG) are readily available, the versatile SMS ZEROFlame burner family proves to be an ideal choice. This burner family excels in combustion control, energy efficiency, and flexibility. With options for flameless, flame, and booster modes, it delivers exceptional performance in terms of flame pattern and achieves extra-low NOx emissions. The SMS ZEROFlame is available in configurations like Hydrogen Hybrid HY2, Dual, and Regen:

  • The Hydrogen Hybrid HY2 configuration provides additional fuel flexibility, operating with hydrogen, coke oven gas, or natural gas, accommodating any hydrogen content (up to 100%) in the fuel mixture.
  • The Regen configuration features a heat recovery system using waste gases to preheat combustion air up to 1,100°C, ensuring enhanced energy efficiency and environmental performance.
  • The Dual configuration is specifically designed for lean gases like BFG (blast furnace), BOFG (basic oxygen furnace gas), and syngas. Dual flame technology optimizes the use of available lean gas power and injects natural gas only when necessary to meet heat demands.

Fuel Flexibility with Dual Flame Technology

The dual flame technology of the SMS ZEROFlame family offers superior flexibility, allowing the mixing of different fuels in a single burner. This minimizes reliance on a single fuel source and expands the utilization of locally available fuels. Unlike past limitations to either lean gases or rich gases in the same burner, the SMS ZEROFlame system equipped with the dual configuration combines the flexibility of dual flame technology with the advantages of flameless technology. It represents SMS group‘s latest and most advanced technology, enabling flameless mode with lean gases and offering customers the ability to harness energy from lean gases while enjoying the exceptional performance of SMS ZEROFlame technology.
