Paderborn-based Benteler Steel/Tube and the Dutch Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group have signed a letter of intent on the supply of CO₂-reduced tubes under the new Benteler brand CliMore. The production route is expected to reduce emissions by up to 85%.

The first truck with CO₂-reduced hydraulic line tubes of the new CliMore product label from Benteler Steel/Tube rolled through the entrance to the Van Leeuwen plant in Duisburg yesterday, Wednesday. Both companies signed a joint letter of intent for the further purchase by Van Leeuwen. The first tonnage delivered will be hydraulic line tubes for use in large agricultural and construction machinery in the hydraulics/pneumatics sector.

CliMore was presented in September. Benteler markets the products in three sustainability categories “Advantage, Ambition and Excellence”. At all three levels, low-emission steel is produced from scrap using the EAF. This recycling alone saves up to 75% of CO₂ emissions compared to the production of new steel from iron ore. In the “Ambition” stage, green electricity is also used in the tube mills and for operating the EAF. This leads to CO₂ savings of up to 85%. The highest level, “Excellence”, will also rely on the electrification of the plants or green hydrogen as an energy source for process energy in the production of steel and its processing into pipes.

Ralph Mathis, CSO BENTELER Steel/Tube, says: “With tubes from our new CliMore product brand, we are helping our customers to master the greatest challenges of our time – climate change and the decarbonization of industry. We are constantly working to reduce the carbon footprint and have already adapted our own product and service portfolio to the increasing ecological interest of our customers.”
