Today’s issue focuses on sustainability. What does that mean? If we had discussed sustainability 20 years ago: over-fertilization, air pollution, nuclear threat, or other environmental issues would have played a much more important role than solely decarbonization. This has changed due to various reasons and while still some political hardliners try to make us believe that there is no such thing as global warming, there is a common understanding that decarbonization is the joint challenge that our modern global society needs to overcome. While there is a common understanding when it comes to goals and values, there are different views in how to achieve it. When it comes to goals and challenges, it makes no difference whether you listen to our political leaders, the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, our secretary of economics and climate Robert Harbeck, or the ambassador of the United States of America in Germany Prof. Dr. Amy Gutmann.

Recently it became obvious that the way towards carbon neutral steel production has been started and that the steel industry is very confident they will be able to manage the shift from a coke-based integrated steel production towards a hydrogen-based steel production.
