As part of their business partnership, ArcelorMittal will supply C.D. Wälzholz GmbH & Co. KG with low carbon emissions wire rod from the Hamburg plant in the future. These steels are produced on the basis of scrap and renewable electricity (100 percent). The low carbon footprint of 504 kg CO2/t of steel is confirmed with an official
Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The delivery of the first 20 tons took place today at the cold rolling company’s site in Hagen, Germany. Waelzholz uses the material to manufacture heat-treated profiles for industrial applications.
ArcelorMittal had already supplied the internationally operating company from Hagen with XCarb® green steel certificates in 2021. The reduction of carbon emissions in these certificates is 2.11 metric tons of carbon dioxides per metric ton of steel and originates from various sustainability projects at ArcelorMittal production sites. The savings are mass balanced on a central account and independently verified.

This cooperation underlines the decarbonization plans of both companies
Waelzholz is pursuing an ambitious roadmap that envisions carbon neutrality by 2045. The technology leader is the first company in the cold rolling industry to implement a validated process for calculating the product carbon footprint on an item-by-item basis. At the same time, Waelzholz is creating the technological conditions to be able to replace natural gas with hydrogen in its own production. ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel manufacturer, aims to achieve Net-Zero by 2050 at the latest. By 2030, emissions in Europe are already to be reduced by 35 percent. Along the steel value chain, the two companies want to jointly pursue a climate-friendly path – from raw material production through its further processing to the end product.
