The company has joined the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative and started the process of validating its climate targets. By making this commitment, the foundry is not only acknowledging its responsibility to protect the environment and the climate, it’s also taking action to secure its location and the jobs it provides in the long term. As one of the largest hand-moulding foundries in the world, it’s a clear signal for a sustainable future in an energy-intensive industry.
Climate change is a major challenge for businesses around the world. For energy-intensive sectors such as the foundry industry, it is essential to focus on sustainable solutions at an early stage. The Science Based Targets Initiative helps companies set science-based emissions reduction targets, in line with those agreed at the Paris Climate Conference. It was founded in 2015 as a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the WWF. The fact that Siempelkamp Giesserei has decided to participate in the SBTi is a signal that the company wants to actively participate in this change and that it is aligning its business model with the requirements of a climate-friendly economy.
“By committing to the SBTi, we’re not only prioritizing climate protection, we’re also strengthening our competitiveness. Customers are increasingly expecting sustainable production processes – and we take this responsibility seriously. Setting our sights on these targets will also help us secure our location and jobs over the long term”,
Dr. Georg Geier, Managing Director at Siempelkamp Giesserei, explains.
The decision in favour of SBTi underlines the company’s innovative strength and pioneering role in the industry. Not only does the foundry want to reduce its own emissions, it also wants to contribute to the sustainable transformation of the entire industry.
Siempelkamp Giesserei completed the first phase of this process with its commitment in March. The next step is for SBTi to conduct a scientific review of the climate targets. This will include a detailed analysis of the greenhouse gas balance and the validation of the action plan to reduce emissions.
With this commitment, Siempelkamp Giesserei is sending a strong signal: Climate protection and industrial production are compatible – and companies that react quickly to the challenges of the future will have a decisive advantage in changing markets.Climate change is a major challenge for companies all over the world.
