Global production of direct reduced iron (DRI) was 127.36 million tons (Mt) in 2022, almost 6.9% higher than the previous record of 119.2 Mt set in 2021. Over the past six years Global DRI production has increased by almost 55 million tons or around 75%.
Worldwide shares
MIDREX® plants produced 73.55 million tons of DRI in 2022, which is 3.8% more than the 70.85 million tons in 2021. The share of MIDREX technology in global DRI production from shaft furnaces was 2022 still ~80%. The MIDREX facilities have produced a total of approximately 1,320 Mt of all forms of DRI (CDRI, HDRI and HBI) by the end of 2022.
