The system is designed to heat treat a wide range of plates from 6 mm to 100 mm thickness x 3,000 mm wide and lengths up to 13,000 mm long in a wide variety of grades for commercial and non-commercial applications.
With an overall line length of 122 m and a restrained roller spray quench at the heart of the system, the heat treatment process results in true flat plates with metallurgical properties that exceed the contractual requirements. The auto-recuperative radiant tube fired atmosphere roller hearth hardening furnace and direct fired temper furnace run off COG – Coke Oven Gas, a byproduct of the steelmaking process. With five integrated steel plants and three special steel plants in India, SAIL is the 20th largest steelmaker in the world with 70,000 employees producing 16 million metric t per year. The Rourkela site has undergone significant investment the past decade that saw new blast furnace ironmaking, continuous casting and hot strip rolling plants constructed in addition to the investments in modern plate quench and temper technology. The consortium contract with Can-Eng as the consortium and technology leader was completed in co-operation with local Indian partners. The system replaced a Soviet era oil quench and temper unit that served SAIL well for many years. The entire line operations are controlled via Can-Eng’s Level II Automation technology and incorporates a dual hot redundant PLC system as well.
