In the past, the industry met annually for Steel Day at the Düsseldorf exhibition center. With ecoMetals Day as the new leading congress for Green Steel and Green Metals, Messe Düsseldorf and its congress partner, Vulkan Verlag, are now reviving this tradition in a modernized form. The one-day event will be held for the first time on 21.9. in the Congress Center CCD of Messe Düsseldorf as part of decarbXpo. The focus of the event will be on conveying concrete application knowledge for the steel and metal sector on the new interdisciplinary three-pronged approach to the Green Transformation: decarbonization, digitalization and the circular economy.
Rapidly advancing global warming, increasing shortages of raw materials, disrupted supply chains, extreme dependence on gas, oil and coal from Russia, combined with skyrocketing energy prices are forcing the new German government to massively accelerate the energy transition. All production and processing operations as well as trade and logistics must now be decarbonized at full speed – through the use of hydrogen, green gases and green electricity as well as CO2-neutral process heat. Because only sustainably produced steel and climate-neutral metals have a future. The iron, steel and smelting industry is therefore facing the biggest challenge in its history: the Green Transformation.
The ecoMetals Day – Pioneers of Sustainability will show which solutions and concepts the leading German steel and aluminum producers, smelters, processors and converters, plant manufacturers and traders are using to master the challenge of the “Green Transformation”.
Program
Congress participants can expect high-level technical presentations from sustainable pioneers and practitioners who will present solutions along the metallurgical value chain. Interdisciplinary panel discussions of energy and hydrogen experts with thought leaders in digitization, automation and the circular economy will provide an opportunity for interaction and intensify knowledge transfer and discourse.
The three-strand interdisciplinary structure of ecoMetalsDay is also its unique selling point. The individual conference topics range from direct reduction via hydrogen and natural gas (DRI), new application potentials of electric arc furnaces and induction crucible furnaces, hybrid heating, carbon capture storage (CCS), carbon capture utilization (CCU), use of hydrogen as a process gas in heat treatment, green steel tracking & tracing, digital carbon footprint passport, steel and sluminum recycling, green automation, circular economy, green steel certification, H2 and CO2 gas grid operations, to legal specifics of high pressure gas pipelines, carbon contracts for difference, hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen manufacturing processes, energy efficiency through AI (Artificial Intelligence) and AM (Additive Manufacturing), zero emission steel and CBAM- Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
The conference sees itself as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange and knowledge transfer between the steel, iron and steelmaking industries and related sectors such as automotive and mechanical engineering as well as science and energy policy. Interactive and frontal formats alternate.
