Primetals Technologies has supplied and implemented full Level 1 and 2 automation systems as well as a process camera system and a new human-machine interface (HMI) at Angang Ltd.’s plate mill in Bayuquan, Liaoning province, China.
The modernization enables Angang to produce new types of steel, such as the high-performance X60MO subsea pipeline special steel, known for its stringent shape and surface quality requirements. Primetals Technologies’ newly implemented advanced process models enable rolling with increased flatness and profile quality, as well as the production of thinner plates down to a thickness of five millimeters. Following the successful modernization, Angang is planning a further expansion of its product portfolio with new steel grades, thereby increasing the proportion of high value-added products.
Several Modernization Projects
Angang’s selection of Primetals Technologies was influenced by the positive experiences from earlier modernization projects. The two companies have partnered for several revamps in recent years, including upgrades to a 4.3-meter and a 5-meter plate mill. With a capacity of 1.4 million tons per year, Angang’s 3.8-meter plate mill produces high-quality medium-thick plates and special steel products. The plate thicknesses vary from 5 to 50 millimeters, and widths from 1,450 to 3,600 millimeters.
One of China’s Largest Producers
Angang Ltd. is a part of the Anshan Iron and Steel Group, a state-owned steel producer with a total annual production capacity of 39 million tons of raw steel. The group is one of China’s largest steel manufacturers and leads the domestic rail and ship plate markets. Anshan Iron and Steel Group exports to more than 60 countries and regions around the world.
