The plant with a production capacity of 2,120 metric tons of ammonia per day (MTPD) is owned by Fertiglobe, a world-leading manufacturer and exporter of urea and ammonia. Fertiglobe is a pioneer in sustainable ammonia production. The project scope included engineering and procurement as well as site supervision during installation and commissioning.
The modernized hydrogen recovery plant enables optimized hydrogen recovery from the purge gas of ammonia synthesis. This increases raw material utilization and boosts ammonia production by up to 6 percent. thyssenkrupp Uhde has successfully completed the commissioning of the plant during ongoing operations, demonstrating exceptional safety awareness as well as the ability to manage complex implementations.
Global Low-Carbon Ammonia Production and Reduction of CO₂ Emissions
This project is an important milestone on the path toward more sustainable and energy-efficient ammonia production. At the same time, it contributes significantly to reducing carbon dioxide emissions per ton of ammonia produced, thereby supporting Fertiglobe’s strategic goal of reducing its carbon footprint and improving the overall efficiency of the plant. The new hydrogen recovery plant as well as an expanded ammonia recovery plant were installed while the facility was in full operation, demonstrating excellent coordination and engineering competence. All connections were precisely designed and installed in advance to ensure smooth and safe integration without interruption to ongoing production.
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “We are proud to be able to contribute to increasing Fertiglobe’s ammonia capacity. This state-of-the-art hydrogen recovery technology is an important step toward an even more resource-efficient production method. By providing innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions combined with our implementation expertise, we create sustainable alternatives for our customers and set new standards in CO₂ reduction.”
Ahmed El-Hoshy, CEO of Fertiglobe: “The new hydrogen recovery plant, designed by thyssenkrupp Uhde and successfully commissioned by both companies, thyssenkrupp Uhde and Fertil, is a milestone on our path to our Manufacturing Improvement Plan (MIP), which focuses on increasing production and energy efficiency. The project achieves an annual internal rate of return of over 25%, increases ammonia production by up to 6%, and simultaneously reduces CO₂ emissions. This project aligns with our commitment to sustainable growth. We are grateful for the smooth collaboration that enabled this achievement during ongoing plant operations.”
