The new caster produces both conventional and high-end slabs. Primetals Technologies supplied the mechanical equipment, as well as comprehensive Level 1 and 2 automation systems. The company also provided construction and implementation services.
Thanks to close collaboration between the two companies, the project progressed seamlessly from design to commissioning, resulting in a timely and efficient start-up.
Advanced design for high-end products
The Baosteel No. 6 caster incorporates advanced mechanical design concepts from Primetals Technologies, combined with state-of-the-art automation and digital solutions. This enables the production of both conventional steel grades and high-end slabs. During the design phase, Primetals Technologies’ advanced modelling tools were used to determine the optimal roll geometry, which effectively reduced mould level fluctuations and enabled higher casting speeds and improved production efficiency.
Multiple intelligent process and quality control systems were also integrated at the same time, including the Dynacs 3D dynamic secondary cooling system and the DynaGap 3D dynamic soft reduction system. This ensures that internal slab quality reaches industry-leading levels.
Stable and efficient operation
To meet the stringent requirements for producing high-grade steel, the caster is equipped with a range of reliable and proven solutions from Primetals Technologies. These solutions support stable, efficient and high-quality production. The high-performance Smart Mold cassette-type mould is equipped with the DynaWidth mould-width adjustment system, enabling flexible switching between different slab sizes. The Mold Expert system ensures stable and reliable casting operations, and the Quality Expert system monitors and predicts the entire production process to continuously enhance product quality.
The Eco-Star spiral roller significantly extends the service life of segment rolls and ensures the precise implementation of dynamic reduction. These rollers also raise the temperature of the slabs after they exit the horizontal segment, greatly reducing energy consumption in hot rolling reheating.
