Integrating AI is becoming a crucial task for the industry to remain competitive and innovative. For the refractory sector, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to optimize production processes, enhance operational efficiency, and improve material properties. These advancements highlight the industry’s commitment to societal goals such as sustainability and resource management.
“We are now seeking speakers for the scientific conference program through a call for participation, targeting universities, research and development institutions, refractory companies, and suppliers—from raw materials to plant and furnace construction,” explains Dr. Christian Dannert, head of planning for ICR 2025 and director of the Forschungsgemeinschaft Feuerfest e.V. The aim is to present attendees with the latest developments in science, research, technology, and practical implementation.
The Scientific Committee has defined nine thematic areas that will frame the conference program. These range from raw material usage and manufacturing processes to applications in the steel, cement, and glass industries, as well as topics like digitalization, testing, and standardization.
The industry is also encouraged to showcase its capabilities at Europe’s largest refractory conference, whether through an exhibition booth or a sponsorship package. These packages may include opportunities for university initiatives and the provision of free tickets for students.
The ICR’s guiding theme will address the challenges of AI implementation, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Limited resources, expertise, and the rapid pace of technological change can make it difficult for SMEs to keep up. However, these challenges also present opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange. “At ICR 2025, we aim to tackle these hurdles head-on,” says Dr. Christian Dannert.
The event will bring together leading scientists, researchers, and industry experts to share insights, case studies, and practical solutions. “We will explore how AI can be effectively integrated into refractory processes, discuss strategies to overcome implementation barriers, and foster a collaborative environment where SMEs can learn from larger companies and vice versa,” adds the ICR director.
The International Colloquium on Refractories (ICR®) is a globally renowned and Europe’s largest event for manufacturers and customers in the steel, glass, and cement industries. It is held annually in Aachen and includes a scientific conference, a trade fair for refractory manufacturers and suppliers of raw materials, machinery, services, and knowledge for the refractory industry, as well as a social industry gathering in the exhibition area during the evening.
