Tenova, a leading developer and provider of sustainable solutions for the green transition of the metals industry, has been awarded a contract by Marcegaglia Gazoldo Inox to modernize and restart its 20-Hi Cold Rolling Mill at the Gazoldo degli Ippoliti plant in Mantua, Italy.

The 20-Hi Mill will include the implementation of advanced Level 1 and Level 2 automation, a nextgeneration Human-Machine Interface (HMI), and Machine Learning Applications for optimizing the rolling pass schedule. The revamping will result in increased production volumes and an expansion of Marcegaglia’s product portfolio. Additionally, Tenova’s Advanced Roll Cluster Configurator, a smart system designed to automatically select the optimal roll sizes required for specific rolling configurations, will provide automated roll management, while vibration monitoring will improve process stability and control.

The upgraded mill will achieve higher rolling accuracy, improved process stability, and enhanced operational reliability. The integration of automation and digital tools will enable Marcegaglia to set new benchmarks in cold rolling efficiency and production flexibility.

“This modernization marks a key step in reactivating one of the most modern 20-Hi cold rolling mills, integrating state-of-the-art automation and digital solutions to enhance performance and efficiency,” stated Paolo Tenca, Project Leader and Chief Technical Officer at Marcegaglia. “We are confident that Tenova’s expertise in 20-Hi mill technology and digital innovation will help us achieve our goal of restarting the mill with the most advanced rolling models and automation available.”

“We are excited to partner with Marcegaglia on this strategic project, which represents a decisive step toward a more digital and automated future,” said Leonardo Frascino, Head of Cold Rolling Product Line at Tenova. “The integration of advanced automation systems and artificial intelligence will optimize Marcegaglia’s mill performance, ensuring production efficiency and operational flexibility.”

The revamped mill is expected to be operational by early 2026.
