Under this agreement, SMS group will supply a complete package of modernized mechanical and electrical equipment, engineered to transform the mill into a state-of-the-art 1250-millimeter wide six-high CVC® plus (continuously variable crown) breakdown copper strip mill. The mill will be modernized in Hangzhou Bay Economic Development Zone, which is located in Shaoxing City in China.

SMS group has already transformed the plant – originally commissioned in 1988 primarily for tin plate production – into a high-performance copper rolling solution. With an annual capacity of around 100,000 tons, the modernized mill enables the processing of copper alloy strip with a maximum entry thickness of 20 millimeters, a minimum exit thickness of 0.5 millimeters, and a width range of 1150 to 600 millimeters, expanding Winjoy’s production capabilities and product flexibility. This modernization project is not merely an equipment upgrade but a demonstration of SMS group’s engineering excellence and commitment to sustainability. The upgraded six-high mill will feature the advanced CVC® plus flatness control system and high-efficiency cooling strategies specifically designed for rolling oil, enabling the production of premium-quality copper and copper alloy strip. The new mill will significantly expand Winjoy’s product portfolio and production flexibility, particularly for wider copper strip, which is increasingly in demand across industries such as the electronics, new energy vehicle, and high-end manufacturing sectors.

Winjoy is investing in the modernization of its facility by SMS group as part of a lifecycle partnership. In June 2025, SMS group received two orders from Winjoy for two 650-millimeter six-high CVC® finishing mills. Those orders marked the beginning of a strong and growing collaboration between the two companies. The signing of this new order marks the start of a deeper, more sustained phase of cooperation.

“SMS group’s technical expertise and equipment capabilities are widely recognized, and we look forward to continuing to deepen our future cooperation based on mutual trust and mutual benefit. We are confident that, with the support of SMS group, Winjoy will achieve even greater success,” says Winjoy’s Chairman Wang Jianli.

Peter Langner, CEO of SMS group China, underscores this by adding “Today’s signing is more than a contract. It is the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership in copper rolling technology. With two finishing mills already in order, and now this major upgrade project, Winjoy and SMS are jointly building one of the most advanced copper strip production lines in China.”

The modernization of the 1250-millimeter wide six-high CVC® breakdown copper strip mill exemplifies SMS group’s commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions. By upgrading pre-owned equipment with cutting-edge technology, SMS group not only enhances production efficiency and product quality but also supports its customers in achieving their strategic goals. This project demonstrates SMS group’s expertise in copper rolling technology and the ability to modernize second-hand equipment to top-tier performance standards – providing a sustainable and cost-effective solution for customers.
