The new boring mill has now been officially inaugurated at the LernWERK at the Hilchenbach site – a state-of-the-art milling machine that offers trainees completely new opportunities in machining mechanics.
The boring mill represents the largest single investment in the 90-year history of training at SMS. The five-meter-high machine is equipped with a powerful 29 kW motor and a fully automatic tool changer. It was installed on a 25-square-metre concrete foundation and designed for a load of up to five tons. LernWERK, SMS group’s training workshop, was inaugurated in 2010. For almost 15 years, it has been used for high-level training in mechanical and electrical professions.
“Our trainees have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art production technology here. The boring mill is a key addition to our machinery and prepares our junior staff optimally for their future tasks,” explains Christof Nadler, Head of Training for Industrial Professions at SMS group.
With its training strategy, SMS group ensures that young talents work with innovative technology right from the start. In the past four years alone, SMS has invested around one million euros in training young people. Fabíola Fernandez, Chief Financial Officer at SMS, emphasized at the inauguration ceremony: “We are investing specifically in training in order to prepare our young people for the challenges of Industry 4.0 in the best possible way. The combination of state-of-the-art equipment and practical training makes us one of the leading training companies in the region.”
