Report: Cam hardening with diode lasers
The complex design of camshafts for the latest combustion engines poses a challenge for heat treatment. Induction hardening cannot deal with the new geometrical demands. Electron beam hardening is extensive and costly. Laser beam hardening, in contrast, is a technical and economical option being applied in the Volkswagen Salzgitter plant.
