Several researchers from the University of Koblenz were honored in the scientific competitions of the UNITECR World Refractories Conference this year. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c.. Peter Quirmbach received an honor for his life’s work and services in the refractory field. Dr. Dominik Hahn and Isabelle Henn, M.Sc., each took third place in competitions.

The conference was organized by the German Refractories Association DFFI and took place from September 26 to 29 at the Kap Europa conference center in Frankfurt am Main. For this purpose, more than 1,100 experts from 48 countries from industry, science and the supply industry gathered to discuss the latest technological and economic findings in 219 scientific papers and 5 panel discussions.
In order to exchange information between the generations and to give young scientists the opportunity to present the results of their current work to the attending audience, UNITECR organizes scientific competitions.

To honor the best doctorate of a year worldwide, the Eirich machine factory in heidheim has organized the Gustav Eirich Award, in which the best doctorates from numerous countries take part. Here, Dr. Dominik Hahn, who recently completed his doctorate at the University of Koblenz, won 3rd place, which was endowed with 2,000 euros.
Another success was the winning of 3rd place by Isabelle Henn, M.Sc., from the University of Koblenz, in the poster competition, which was strongly represented with 53 international entries. There, researchers presented their work on posters. This prize was worth 100 euros.
Lifetime achievement of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Quirmbach honored
At each UNITECR meeting, selected individuals are honored for their lifetime achievements in the refractory field. This year, this highest honor worldwide, the title of “Distinguished Life Member”, was awarded to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Quirmbach of the University of Koblenz.
This was in recognition of his achievements in, among other things, the founding and development of the European Refractories Center ECREF in Höhr-Grenzhausen and the professorship for Technical Chemistry and Corrosion Science at the University of Koblenz.
The next UNITECR meeting will be held in Cancun, Mexico from October 27-30, 2025 and will be hosted by the South American society ALAFAR.
