ESF Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi, one of Europe’s leading steel manufacturers, contracted the AI company Smart Steel Technologies to implement the SST Temperature AI package at its site in Riesa, Germany. The AI-based process control system will be installed at the melt shop, with individual components covering all processes from the electric arc furnace (EAF) through secondary metallurgy to the continuous caster.

Complementing existing process control software, the AI-based system provides realtime temperature predictions as well as real-time guidance for operators at all stations of the melt shop. As a result, temperature variances are minimized, process stability increases, and temperature buffers can be reduced. This enables the melt shop to reduce overall temperature levels in production, leading to permanent energy savings and increased productivity.

“Pressure on the energy-intensive steel industry is constantly growing. To meet these challenges, we are investing in the optimization of our temperature control at the Riesa site and are now implementing the latest Artificial Intelligence technology to reach highest precision. This will allow us to further improve process stability and energy efficiency. We trust in the expertise of Smart Steel Technologies and plan to achieve relevant results quickly”, comments CEO Uwe Reinecke.
