As 2024 draws to a close, this edition of think.steel reflects on some of the most significant European conferences from the summer of 2024. An impressive lineup of speakers attracted industry professionals from across Europe—and beyond—to Stockholm for the “Future Steel Forum,” organized by Steel Times magazine. Around 700 steel industry professionals, producers, experts, and media representatives gathered at Danieli’s headquarters in Buttrio, Italy, in late May for an event that first began in 2000 as Danieli Open Week. Now held every five years, 2024 marked the fifth edition of what is now known as the Danieli Innovaction Meeting.

Europe continues to lead in steel technology innovation, but challenges like declining production were a key topic of discussion among major industry stakeholders at the Kallanish Europe Steel Markets 2024 conference in Milan this June.

In a special feature, we focus on DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) production in 2023. As sustainability and alternative fuel usage grow increasingly critical for the steel industry, DRI production offers a pathway to reducing carbon emissions.
