Dear Reader,
Sustainability is one of the key issues driving the thermoprocess technology industry. But how can industrial furnaces be operated sustainably in the long term? Do you have to choose one form of heating or is a combination of different variants possible? In our hp interview, Paul van Doesburg and Dr. Bora Özkan, CEO and CTO of Ipsen International, provide a clear answer. It’s the combination that makes the difference, as the new hybrid furnace, ATLAS Green, which has already won the German Innovation Award, shows.
Alternative heating methods are also becoming increasingly popular in burner technology. In their technical paper “From Natural Gas to Alternative Energy Sources: Decarbonization of Burner Technology”, Kristina Reichelt, Hans-Jürgen Lucas and Tobias Hegerath from Outokumpu Nirosta GmbH look at the transition to energy-efficient burner technology and the various approaches that Outokumpu is pursuing in this area.
Another important step towards saving energy in everyday operations is the use of artificial intelligence. In his article “A new Data-driven Era – can the Heat Treatment Industry keep up?”, Peter Sherwin from Watlow Electric Manufacturing Company shows how intelligent operating systems are currently evolving and takes a critical look at the current state of the heat treatment industry in this context.
In the section Industrial Furnaces and Processes, Helmut Egger, from Egger Consulting, gives an insight into how carbon based atmospheres behave under different changing utility supply conditions.
